Polythene Square Mat 50cm x 50cm
Widely accepted as an effective and low-cost material, provided it is firmly anchored in place, normally by being weighted down or buried along it's edges. Being UV stabilised, should remain effective for about three growing seasons, before being significantly degraded by the UV light. Our polythene is normally black.
Thickness 125mu (500 gauge).
Polythene Squares are either slit across the centre or from centre to one edge.

Now commonly used as a mulching material. Not as strong as woven polypropylene, but cheaper and should last at least 5 years.
Permeable to water and will not fray when cut.
Can be pegged, but must not be allowed to flap.

Probably the best photodegradable material we offer. Much stronger than either polythene or spun-bonded polypropylene and should remain effective for at least 7 years.
Although tightly woven to prevent weed growth, is permaeble to water. Can be easily pegged and will not tear around such pegs.

Jute Square 50cm x 50cm
Manufactured from a mixture of jute and cashmere hair neddled on to a hessian backing. Conveniently pegged to the ground, avoiding the need to cover or bury the material, actions which stimulate rotting.
Absorbs water; when saturated is permeable. As the material degrades, nitrogen and other elements are released to the benefit of growing plants.
Can be damaged by birds seeking nesting material

Std Bitumen Felt Treespat 50cm x 50cm
Used successfully as a mulching material for over 25 years. Normally remains effective for between 2 and 5 growing seasons, depnding on the wetness of the site and the weight of the material. On wet sites of high pH rotting will be more rapid. When laid in cold conditions, bituminous felt is stiff and needs to be anchored in place, normally with a little soil over the corners and, if necessary, along each edge.

Similar in apperance and properties to jute, being pleasant to handle, simple to peg down and permeable to water, and should remain effective for at least 2 growing seasons in most situations. Because jute is biodegradable, thse mats shouls be anchored by pegging, not by covering or burying.
