 | About Plug Plants Plug plants are small, low cost plants with a robust root system ready for planting straight into soil or potting on to grow larger plants. They are best planted using a bulb planter to remove a core of soil and then planting the plug into the hole with some backfilling of soil/compost. The best time for this is August-October and then Early March to middle of April. The plants should be watered prior to planting and then kept moist whilst they establish themselves. This is a good method of establishing wild flowers into uninteresting grassland. Plant 1-2 plugs per sq metre, keeping the grass mown (60-75mm) prior to planting and through to late February, then allow meadow area to grow, the flowers to set seed. When the flowering is over, mow the hay crop, turn to dry out and encourage seed to be shed into the sward.Remove the hay crop. To encourage germination, harrow the remains of the sward to open up bare soil and then tread the soil down again to firm the seed into contact with the soil. Over a few years the population of the intrduced flora will increase and spread.
