Spriral treeguards have been used extensively in the UK since the 1970's for protecting young trees and whips from debarking by animals such as rabbits, hares, sheep, deer and small mammals.

Standard Spiral Guard 45cm x 38mm
Spiral Guards are opaque plastic cylinders, with a slit spiralling down form top to bottom, used to protect the lower stem of trees that are at least 15cm taller than the guard.
3 diameters - 38mm and 2 heavy-duty versions, 50mm and 63mm
3 standard heights - 45cm, 60cm and 75cm
Normally dark brown, but can be dark green or black.
Made of course from recycled plastic, do not normally have ventilation holes. Small side branches can ofen find their way out through such holes, later preventing the guard unwrapping; in any case sufficient ventilation is usually provided via the spiral slit.
Spiral gurads must be tall enough to provide the necessary protection, normally 60cm against rabbits, 75cm against hares. If the trees are not at least 15cm talller than the spiral guards, transparent Spiral Shelters should be substituted, as smaller trees hidden within spiral guards will not grow properly.
Spiral Guards may have to be replaced with a netting guard, should browsing protection still be required once the tree stem has a larger diameter than the guard.
Newly planted, unstaked trees should be supported until the root system becomes established, using a bamboo cane inserted inside the guard.
